GETTING YOUR ACT TOGETHER - I am sick of people putting away their wallets in these recessionary times. Sure many people have lost their jobs and many are tightening their belts as incomes get squeezed but we still have to live and for me it`s not about spending less but about spending wisely.
TOP TIPS - And here are my top tips to spend wisely in these difficult times.
BUDGETS - Make a monthly budget and stick to it. Any surplus funds at the end of each month can be used to pay off debt or added to your savings.
CREDIT CARDS - Cut up your credit cards. Credit cards are expensive. This will stop impulse buying which wrecks any budget.
INTERNET - Go online and check you are getting the best deal on things like credit cards, insurance, utilities, broadband and mobile phones. Indeed you can compare the prices of most goods on the Internet and find the best deal around. And check out too voucher sites which give vouchers and promotional codes away for free.
FOOD SHOPPING - When food shopping switch from big brands to own label brands. You will not notice the difference except in your wallet. You could also use a range of supermarkets to get the best deal on everything you buy.
SALE REDUCTIONS - Look for sale or discount prices and haggle. In this climate retailers will always be prepared to lower their prices rather than lose a customer.
NO TREATS? - Cut out your little treats. £2 per day on a fancy cup of coffee is £10 per week, £40 a month and £500 a year. Buy a thermos mug and make up your own coffee. I`m sure with a little forethought you can find many other ways to save money.
QUALITY - And remember that buying cheaper does not mean that you have any less rights than any one buying expensively. You are still protected whether you are buying on the High St or online.
CONSUMER RIGHTS - Anything you buy must be of satisfactory quality and fit for purpose unless you know the goods were faulty when they were bought. If you take the goods back within 6 months the shop has to prove they were not faulty when you bought them. After 6 months the onus is on you.
INTERNET CONSUMER RIGHTS - And if you buy on the Internet you have 7 working days to send back what you have bought, no questions asked. This means you have more rights buying online than on the High St.
CREDIT CARD USEAGE - One last thing about consumer protection. If you do have a credit card and can stick to paying it back in full each month, buy on the card. By doing this you can make a claim for any faulty goods against the credit card too and there are times, when the seller goes bust, for example, when this added protection can come in handy.
CASH BACK SAVINGS - And while talking credit cards you can even earn money while you shop. Sounds ridiculous but it`s possible with a cash back credit card. Another great way to spend wisely.

Reviews
'The practical advice provided throughout this book is presented in a no-frills, snappy style that ensures the essential information is not lost in a clutter of unnecessary detail. ...This is an excellent volume that in every sense is a handbook for procurement specialists and beginners alike.' Economic Outlook and Business Review (Dec 06)
'An ideal guide for any buyer that aspires to be a procurement manager. It goes beyond the mere process manual and explains purchasing’s role at the heart of a successful organisation. I particularly approve of the way that Roylance stressed the need for purchasing to act as an example of good practice in business ethics. It distills a lifetime of experience in purchasing into an easily digestible read full of wisdom.'
Trevor Kitching, Director, ACS Supply Chain Consultancy Ltd
'Written in Roylance's humorously dictatorial style, the book condenses a year's worth of instruction into one handy volume. It covers everything you need to know and consider when engaging your internal customers on procurement's offer to your company. ...Well done.' Supply Management (CIPS Members magazine)'.
