BACKGROUND A recurring management nightmare is the thought of ‘bad apple’ corrupt buyers taking bribes from unscrupulous suppliers. If you think that this only happens in third world countries think again. The UK courts have a long history of crooked buyer cases stretching back into the annals of time. I once worked for a company where a marketing executive responsible for selecting suppliers and approving expenditure on media services was sent to jail for four years for taking purchasing bribes of over a million pounds. He favoured a company of which his wife was a director. The buying scam worked by them producing 2 invoices for every piece of work which he subsequently approved because his was the only signature required.
According to The Global Anti-corruption Group http://www.unglobalcompact.org/Issues/transparency_anticorruption/ an organisation that is linked to the United Nations the UK at 16th does not feature very highly in the Least Corrupt Countries League.
