HEATING & ENERGY COSTS continue to increase at an alarming rate with no sign of let up for beleaguered Households and Business consumers. Heating bills for the average household in the UK look set to rise to around £2,000 per year - a lot of money to find from already taxed income! However there are ways that you can ease the burden of ever increasing energy costs -
SHOP AROUND - SWITCH ENERGY SUPPLIERS About half UK households have never switched their electricity and gas suppliers. Consequently they are paying over the odds. To save money on energy combine gas and electricity with one supplier and in these days of ever increasing prices look for a favorable fixed rate deal. Switching energy suppliers is easy, for all the information you need go to our SWITCH page.
SAVE MONEY WITH AN ONLINE POWER TARIFF Paper based is expensive for power suppliers so most of them offer discounts if you are prepared to help them automate their administration. You will need to pay by monthly direct debit and send them your meter readings over the Internet. You will no longer receive paper monthly or quarterly bills but you will be informed by email to any changes to your direct debit amounts.
SAVE MONEY BY SWITCHING OFF APPLIANCES It has been estimated that leaving electrical equipment on standby on average increases bills by 8% a year.
SAVE MONEY BY WRAPPING UP Wear an extra sweater in winter and turn down your thermostat. Turning it down by just one degree centigrade will cut heating bills by around 10%.
INSULATION The two most cost effective ways of cutting heating costs are cavity wall insulation and loft insulation. Even if you have it already it may well be worthwhile adding an extra layer to the loft.
HEATING GRANTS If you are on benefits you may be entitled to house insulation grants of up to £4,000. To check go to Warmfront or phone the Energy efficiency Advice Centre on 0800 512012.
SAVE MONEY ON LIGHTING Low energy bulbs are now almost as cheap as conventional ones so they soon start saving you money. Avoid trendy halogen spots - just feel the heat the expensive wasted heat they generate.
SAVE MONEY BY BUYING ENERGY EFFICIENT APPLIANCES Look for the energy efficiency ratings listed on all new equipment. It will pay to go for the lowest rated. To compare the cost of running various appliances go to www.sust-it.net
SAVE MONEY ON DRYING CLOTHES Clothes dryers are notoriously heavy on electricity usage. Using mother nature via a clothes line outdoors costs nothing at all.
FILLING A KETTLE Over filling a kettle and not using some of it wastes gas or electricity as well as water. Use coloured tape on the side of a kettle to mark the amount of water to make your normal two/three cups etc.
SAVE MONEY BY MEASURING YOUR USAGE For all sorts of money saving gadgets go to Nigelsecostore.
