Switch energy suppliers

INTRODUCTION
The price of electricity and gas seems to be on an ever increasing price spiral, it must therefore pay to seek ways to save money on these expensive essential commodities. In the UK there are many companies who will supply gas or electricity irrespective of where you live. Since deregulation you are not required to use your local supplier. The choice is yours, you can chose different suppliers for each commodity or chose one company to supply both, which usually will work out cheaper. Changing suppliers can cut energy costs and is now easy especially if you follow our free step by step guide.

STEP 1 - Analyse your annual electricity & gas use age
Go through your bills for the last year and total your use age of gas & electricity in terms of both money and units.

STEP 2 - Find the best value supplier
Use cost comparison web sites to find the best supplier for you. Just feed in your annual usage and the web sites will come up with estimates of how much you can save from different suppliers. If you do not posses your annual usage they will still come up with prices but they may not be so accurate. Try several different cost comparison web sites because, being cynical, they obtain commission from click through take up.

STEP 3 - Doing the deal and changing energy supplier
Once you have found a better value supplier you could go back to your existing supplier and try to haggle a better deal. Before you start we suggest you follow the tips on our Negotiation page. In all probability you may not achieve your target but it is always worth a try. Assuming you now wish to switch your energy supplier you can either contact the new supplier direct or your just click through to them from a price comparison site. Once the new contract is agreed it will take about six weeks to be activated. Your new energy supplier should handle the administration work for you and also keep you informed of progress.

STEP 4 - Dumping you old energy supplier/s
Just to stop your old supplier playing silly games it is best to give them at least 28 days notice, firstly by telephone then confirmed in writing.

STEP 5 - Outstanding Bills
Your new supplier will probably ask you to read the meters on change over day and notify them. But in any case you should read the meters yourself in order that you can check the final bills from your old supplier/s and the first one from your new energy supplier.

STEP 6 - Save more money on your energy consumption Just go to our cut your heating costs page.
