Cut Water bills

INTRODUCTION
It is estimated that every person in the UK uses on average 33 gallons of water per day. Being a bit more frugal can halve this amount and with household bills approaching an average of £600 a year it is worth making the effort. Unfortunately competition does not apply in the water industry as the Government has not to date organised things so that it is possible to switch suppliers, as can be done with electricity and gas. Despite this it is possible to make worthwhile savings on water bills by adopting a few sensible measures such as -

STEP 1 - Install a meter
If you do not have a meter you are paying a flat consumer averaged rate. Even without taking any measures to reduce consumption switching to a meter will save money for most households. However this will not apply to large water usage households such as large families or very keen gardeners. A rough rule of thumb is that if you have more bedrooms than people a meter will reduce water cost by up to £125. At the moment water companies are encouraging the use of meters, but being cynical once everyone has one will there still be savings? Most households in the UK can have a meter fitted for free and within the first twelve months you can have it taken out again for free if it does not suit you.See ofwat for more information.

STEP 2 - Take a shower to save water
By taking a shower instead of a bath you use two thirds less water. If you must have a bath get a member of the family to use the same water. Or even cosier why not bathe together?!!

STEP 3 - Taps and washers
Avoid leaving taps running instead of using a sink plug. Running a tap for just one minute unnecessarily wastes two gallons of water. A dripping tap will waste around 20 gallons of water a week. If you fix it yourself a new washer will cost around 50 pence.

STEP 4 - Filling a kettle
Over filling a kettle and not using some of it wastes both water and gas or electricity.Use coloured tape on the side of a kettle to mark the amount of water to make your normal two/three cups etc.

STEP 5 - Buy a Hippo
Every toilet flush uses around nine gallons of water and can account for 30% of the total household usage. Dropping a Hippo (a brick made out of dense polyethylene) into the cistern will save around half a gallon of water per flush. Hippo They only cost about £2.00. Alternatively you can use an ordinary house brick wrapped in a plastic bag to stop brick dust getting into the cistern. A more high tech solution is to install a new 2 button cistern, one button provides a light flush the other a full flush of water as is required.

STEP 6 - Water efficient appliances
Look out for washing machines and dishwashers with the new EU water efficiency labels to compare models. The most efficient will only use around 11 gallons of water per wash. Typically dishwashers and washing machines account for around 16% of household usage, so making savings will be worthwhile.
